Life Long Learning

The University Center Gaylord offers a wide variety of community education classes for youth and adults who wish to expand their learning and skills through non-college credit courses that are available throughout the year. Course offerings have included Computer classes…Beginner, Word, EXCEL, Powerpoint, Quickbooks, Foreign Languages, Photography, Dog obedience training, Financial topics, Summer adventure classes for kids and More!

We are currently offering the following learning opportunities: 

Self-Publishing 101

This six-week course offers an opportunity for individuals to learn about the various aspects of self-publishing a fiction or nonfiction book from authors Daniel and Laura Martone.  Each week they will cover a new topic and offer advice for jumpstarting your independent publishing career or side business. 

Each Wednesday, September 11 – October 16

Cost: $100.00 for six-part series or $30.00 per workshop. 

For individuals who would like to participate but don’t have time to commit to all six weeks, this course offers the flexibility to pick and choose the workshops you are interested in attending.  The following workshops are available: 

Workshop #1 – Intro to Self-Publishing
Workshop #2 – Writing and Editing a Book
Workshop #3 – Selling Products on Amazon
Workshop #4 – Creating Newsletters and Utilizing Promotional Sites
Workshop #5 – Advertising (Including Facebook Ads)

About the instructors 

Laura Martone is a 1998 graduate of Northwestern University (Evanston, IL) with a dual degree in English (B.A.) and radio/TV/film (B.S.).  Over the past two decades, Laura has written technical and marketing copy for several Chicago-area companies, contributed travel articles to several magazines (including National Geographic Traveler and MotorHome), and written and edited a variety of travel guidebooks (for Insight Guides and Avalon Travel).  With her husband Daniel, she’s also co-authored numerous sci-fi and fantasy novels, co-directed a few film festivals (from Los Angeles to New Orleans), and created two audio walking tours of the French Quarter.  

Daniel Martone is a 1993 graduate of Columbia College (Chicago, IL) with a degree in film directing.  Over the past two decades, Daniel has owned and co-directed several renowned film festivals across the country.  Together, he and his wife, Laura, have also worked on numerous film projects, from screenplays to feature films.  Daniel and Laura have co-written several fiction series in a variety of genres, including space opera, post-apocalyptic (zombie), fantasy game lit, and urban fantasy.  They have published more than 20  fiction titles, including short stories, novelettes, novellas, and novels.
